A ONE-TO-ONE HELP-WITH-WRITING SERVICE FOR STUDENTS IN
HIGHER EDUCATION
Could you
use some help with writing? Are you struggling with an essay, report,
dissertation or thesis?
Have you actually been taught how to write an essay or report, or how to produce a
dissertation or thesis? Or
have you woken up to the horrible truth that you are being tested on what you
haven't actually been taught?
A strand of my
new justwrite service offers help with writing -
you might call it 'coaching in writing' - specially designed for undergraduates,
taught postgraduates and research students who realise that there's something missing from their education.
As you'll see
from my Introduction, I used to be a university
lecturer. I taught social policy at the London School of Economics for 25 years, and for the past ten
years I have specialized in giving students one-to-one help with various kinds
of writing. So I do have many years of experience in
helping people to sort their ideas out, overcome blocks to writing, and produce
the document they are tasked to produce, QUICKLY!
And I write books. I
have written seven 'Student-Friendly Guides', including the best-selling Write
Great Essays! and Excellent Dissertations!, published by Open University Press. You can get some idea of
my own writing skill from taking a look at them. For more information please go to www.student-friendly-guides.com.
I do my own editing too. My books
are published in the form that I write them: they have not been knocked into
shape by a publisher's copy-editor.
I can't
write your essay, report, dissertation or thesis for you. You have to provide the raw material -
the content, the subject matter. I don't do subject matter: I'm not offering you
my subject knowledge of the social sciences. What I can and do offer you is the
'writing know-how', the skill of turning thinking into writing, that helps you turn
your raw material into
a finished document. In the process, you acquire that skill for yourself. You'll be
amazed at the boost that having that skill gives to your confidence!
In a
nutshell, I provide the tutoring and support for writing that your teachers ought to give
you but are too busy and overstretched to supply. I can't do it for free, of
course, but my rates are economical and experience shows it is possible to cover
a great deal of ground in a short space of time.
HOW THE SERVICE WORKS
When
you get in touch with me, I'll ask you for the following information:
1.
Your name and contact details (email and phone)
2. The title of the degree you're studying for, and which year you're in.
(I don't need to know which
university or college you're at.)
3. The title of the course that you want help with
4. The title of the essay or whatever that you're grappling with. (If you
haven't got a title, tell me the
subject.)
If
we agree to go ahead together, I'll ask you to email some more things to me.
1.
Send me one or two samples of your writing, preferably with marks
and markers' comments attached. The
marks etc. should give me
some idea of the standard that is
expected of you.
2. If the title of the essay doesn't make it clear to you what you are
expected to write, have a go at
translating it into language that does
make it clear what you have to write,
and send your translation to
me too. (Students
often find themselves having to start by
deciphering a convoluted essay
topic.)
3. If you're working towards a dissertation or thesis it would be helpful to
see anything you've written so far
about the objective of your work,
such as a research question.
From this point on, what I'll help
you to do is to clarify and organize your thoughts, and create a draft outline
structure (e.g. an essay plan) for the piece of writing you're going to produce.
If you have to carry out a literature review I'll help you to make that task
manageable. And I can help you to overcome any writing block you may encounter.
If you wish, I will proof-read and check the grammar
and punctuation of the
pre-final draft, and raise queries where I think the meaning may not be clear.
This is a service that students whose first language is not English find
particularly valuable.
